Today is both a day celebrating our ocean’s incredibly complex underwater ecosystem and a call to action for businesses and consumers around the world to take action to better protect our ocean’s coral reefs.
Coral reefs are large underwater rock formations made up of communities of thousands of marine organisms called corals.
The health of our coral reefs is vital to the health of our oceans. Marine life relies on healthy coral reefs for protection and food to survive.
Coral reefs are currently undergoing a severe crisis. Recent studies have shown that 50% of the world’s coral reefs have already been destroyed. Unfortunately, the Great Barrier Reef has decreased by 40% and another 40% may be lost over the next 30 years.
Reasons for the destruction of the reef:
• Changing of the climate
• Rising sea temperatures
• Plastic pollution, chemical dumping and waste water.
• Increase in the number of maritime traffic and activity
• Unmanaged tourism
• Sunscreen not safe for reefs.
All this negatively affects the coral reefs of our ocean and destroys them.
You can help by supporting organizations working to restore these beautiful underwater ecosystems!
– Coral gardeners
– Coral Recovery Fund
– Marine Institute MOC
