Norfolk, Virginia. “Construction on the Elizabeth River left local Canadian geese with fewer nesting sites, but goose pair Gail and Bob managed to find the perfect spot: a purpose-built platform near PETA’s Sam Simon Center.
They moved shortly after PETA set up the platform in 2020 and quickly gained the admiration of the group’s staff – and earned their names – when the female, despite storm– strong wind at a speed of 70 miles per hour, and the male refused to leave her side, beanswaying up and down in ferocious waves. After raising two goslings last year, Gail and Bob returned this year to the newly renovated platform, now even higher above the water and accessible via two new ramps – and after the couple hatched eight goslings and adopted two more who were separated from by their parents. , the little family is happy and healthy.
Additional photos of Gail and Bob’s family are here, and videos are available here…
“Gail and Bob are great examples of how loyal goose couples treat each other and how loyal goose parents treat their goslings,” says PETA Senior Vice President Daphne Nachminovich. “PETA hopes their family history will inspire people to make some space for wildlife that have so little room in our overdeveloped world.”
This year, PETA created a wildlife-only site on its coastal site where all geese can drink, preen and rest out of sight of the dogs playing in the Bea Arthur Dog Park, while the park’s webcams are still visible to viewers. for PETA dogs. …
On its website, PETA offers tips on how to live in harmony with geese – highly emotional and outgoing animals that mourn the loss of their mates and eggs and use up to 13 different calls to warn, greet and express each other’s feelings. Residents can encourage geese to move to more hospitable areas (such as the PETA property) by never feeding wild animals, planting shrubs along the waterline, and planting stuffed dogs and other predators.
PETA, whose motto is in part that “animals are not in our hands to be abused in any way,” is opposed to arrogance, a worldview focused on human superiority. For more information please visit PETA.org or subscribe to the group on Twitter, Facebook, or Instagram…
