Washington – See the following statement from PETA Vice President for International Laboratory Methods Shalin Gala Regarding the report that the Pentagon blames the Royal Thai Armed Forces for the brutality of the Cobra Gold military exercises:
The Pentagon insincerely blames Thailand solely for the gruesome animal killings that occur during the annual Cobra Gold exercise. The US military is sponsoring the exercise and deployed about 5,500 troops last year, using some of the more than $ 12 million in taxpayer money earmarked for training. If the Department of Defense is truly committed to providing “the best humane treatment for animals,” this certainly should not include decapitating cobras to drink their blood, or chewing on the living bodies of other animals. It is time for the military to take seriously the dangerous threat of zoonotic disease posed by Cobra Gold and to permanently withdraw from the use of live animals during this training.
