Oceanport, NJ – See the following statement from PETA Senior Vice President Cathy Guillermo regarding the first races at Monmouth Park on May 28 under the new whipping ban to get horses to run faster:
PETA congratulates Monmouth and New Jersey Park officials for eliminating the most obvious and visible form of abuse in horse racing – flogging. Beating a horse can be prosecuted as cruelty to animals under any circumstances outside the racetrack. If you put a jockey on the back of an animal, it will not become less violent. While the horse racing industry continues to suffer, Monmouth Park is now leading the country – and much of the world – in recognizing this and eliminating this atrocity.
