Boulder, Colorado. – See the following statement by PETA Senior Vice President Katy Guillermo regarding USDA documents showing the University of Colorado-Boulder has been cited for serious violations of federal animal welfare laws. A meadow vole was found dead with its head clamped between a PVC pipe and a metal cage containing food and water. According to the federal report, it took until six days before the staff realized that the vole was dead. In another incident, two prairie voles died of thirst when water was not available to them due to a malfunctioning water bottle.

The University of Colorado-Boulder needs to move away from animal experimentation. Just released government documents obtained by PETA show that the university was cited for two critical violations of federal animal welfare laws for obscene disregard that resulted in small animal deaths from thirst, one of which had a head stuck and was unable to get to food and water. The workers didn’t even notice it for almost a week. It is known that voles are intelligent, sensitive and responsive, but the same cannot be said about the staff of K.Yu.-Boulder’s laboratory.
