Smithfield, Virginia. “When will Smithfield prohibit the hiring or contracting of drivers who have been repeatedly judged to drive or have been found guilty of an accident?” This is the question that a PETA representative will ask tomorrow at the annual meeting of the WH Group, parent company of Smithfield Foods, Inc., in Hong Kong.

PETA, which acquired shares in Smithfield last year, notes that just last week, Smithfield’s truck carrying nearly 200 pigs in Suffolk, Virginia capsized – 18th a truck crash on its way to the only massacre the group documented. In response, PETA plans to place a billboard in the area to commemorate the pigs.

The driver involved in the accident last week was cited for not being able to control the vehicle. Another Smithfield driver, who rolled a truck last November after killing dozens of pigs, had several driving convictions, including reckless driving. Others were charged with speeding after collisions and other traffic violations.

“Truck accidents leave pigs maimed and bloody, and those who do not die on impact suffer for hours screaming from an overturned trailer,” said PETA executive vice president Tracy Reiman. “Smithfield is already responsible for so much animal suffering and PETA is calling on the company to relieve pigs of the additional pain and fear caused by reckless drivers behind the wheel.”

Before loading them onto trucks heading to the slaughterhouse, the meat industry squeezes mother pigs into narrow metal stalls barely larger than their size and forces them to become pregnant or breastfeed almost constantly. The workers cut off the piglets’ tails, cut their teeth with pliers and castrate the males – all without any pain relief. In the slaughterhouse, workers hang pigs upside down – sometimes still conscious – and slit their throats.

PETA, whose motto is in part that “the animals are not ours to eat” – opposes arrogance, a worldview focused on human superiority. For more information please visit PETA.org or subscribe to the group on Twitter, Facebook, or Instagram…
