However, there is some good news from the recent wave of rescue operations. The Orangutan Project recently joined forces with its two Indonesian partners, Orangutan Information Center and Orangutan Protection Center, to form Sumatran Rescue Alliance (SRA) and Bornean Orangutan Rescue Union (BORA).
These alliances have significantly increased the scale and frequency of their patrols and rescue operations, as well as providing additional security and resources.
Although it is illegal to own and trade orangutans in IndonesiaUntil now, it has been common for criminals to escape punishment. Cox said the seizure itself is helping to destroy the orangutan trade because buyers will become wary of buying orangutans, which could be confiscated at any time.
Both alliances also operate rehabilitation centers, so every orangutan confiscated is quarantined, nursed, and schooled in the jungle for a second chance at life in the wild.
“We are now at a stage where every orangutan matters, not only because he is a very intelligent and thoughtful species, but also because we need every endangered orangutan to live in safe populations, adding to the genetic the strength and variety of their types, – said the Roosters.
Orangutan Project is urgently raising funds for the resources of its rescue unions for the next 12 months.
