Trautman, North Carolina – After PETA alerted the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) of goats seen hobbling around Zootastic Park and in need of veterinary care, the agency cited a roadside zoo that did not spot multiple animals in the same condition, noting that such inattention could cause “more frequent periods of pain and suffering.” One of the goats was a child whose obvious and almost certainly painful lameness was likely left untreated for at least two months.

“This pathetic roadside zoo has shown that it either cannot or does not want to provide even basic care for the animals in its care,” says Michelle Sinnott, Esq., PETA Foundation’s deputy director of animal law enforcement in captivity. “PETA is urging Zootastic to allow all animals to be transported to reputable agencies before this is quoted again.”

After hearing from PETA, the USDA cited Zootastic just last year for showing a clearly worried young tiger – which was featured in a video posted on Facebook, lying, unresponsive, and panting – at a public event. And in addition to repeated refusals to provide animals with adequate veterinary care, the park’s long history of violations of federal animal welfare law includes failure to maintain enclosures to prevent animal injury, mishandling after a tiger cub has bitten a member of the public, and lack of sufficient barriers after after a wildebeest attacked a worker, resulting in serious injury. In 2016, the facility was fined over $ 7,000 for breaching animal welfare.

PETA, whose motto is in part that “the animals are not ours to be used for entertainment” – opposes arrogance, a worldview focused on human superiority. For more information please visit PETA.org or subscribe to the group on Twitter, Facebook, or Instagram…
