    Cicadas in New York: What’s Happening Now?

    New York is a place that boldly embraces the changing seasons, but the new Brood X cicadas may leave the public a little less popular. These insects have bright red eyes and look a lot like locusts, but fear not! They just come out of a prolonged sleep, even if they come in massive flocks.

This is not a plague or a premonition – this is simply the awakening of Brood X after 17 years of inactivity. Previously, cicadas lived underground, and only the warmth of spring allows them to be released into the air around. They don’t come out every spring, but Brood X hasn’t specifically been around since 2004. To date, experts believe that their release into the region will be the largest hatching of these cicadas since the last appearance of these cicadas.
