Sacramento – PETA discovered that Steve Martin’s “Working Wildlife” – the outfit that featured a Kodiak bear named Tag at two press conferences by John Cox – is associated with some of the most notorious (and in one case jailed) animal traffickers in wildlife exploitation business:

    • Martin acquired Tag from Robert Somiller, a bear breeder who was in so much trouble with the USDA – including not treating bears’ wounds and locking the animals in metal barrels, leaving them in a “state of infinite suffering” – that the agency put him on hold licensed and confiscated seven bears and a cougar in February.
    • Martin also traded animals as commodities with King of tigers players: he acquired a lion from “Doc” Antl– accused of cruelty to animals and illegal trade in wild animals – and threw chimpanzees, bears and a lion at a roadside zoo run by “Joe Exotic… “

Below you will find a statement by the PETA Foundation’s Assistant Director of Animal Law Enforcement Debbie Metzler:

Steve Martin trades animals like baseball cards with the worst offenders from a bear breeder who is in such hot water he’s practically a tea bag. King of tigers criminal Joseph Maldonado-Passage. PETA says the bear Tag is being used in a publicity stunt and needs to be moved to an accredited shelter where he can live like a bear should, instead of being treated like props.

Note: PETA supports animal rights, opposes all forms of animal exploitation and educates the public on these issues. The Group does not participate, directly or indirectly, or interfere in any political campaign on behalf of or against any candidate for public office or any political party.

PETA, whose motto is in part that “the animals are not ours to be used for entertainment” – opposes arrogance, a worldview focused on human superiority. For more information please visit PETA.org or subscribe to the group on Twitter, Facebook, or Instagram…
