Thermal, California. – PETA sent a letter to Riverside County Sheriff Chad Bianco this morning to investigate the brutal whipping of a horse at the Desert International Horse Park show.

Video footage from January 30 shows competing jumper at the German Grand Prix Kevin Lemke forcefully hitting the horse named Luck with his whip six times – so hard that the sound of the punches could be heard during the video playback – after the horse gave up the jump. Lemke was subsequently disqualified for excessive use of the whip. After beating the horse, he tried to jump again, as a result of which Luck hit the fence and knocked over the poles. PETA notes that the incident appears to violate Section 597 (b) of the California Penal Code, which prohibits cruelty to animals.

“If a handler hits a dog in the middle of a show, he is investigated for cruelty,” says PETA Senior Vice President Katy Guillermo. “California’s Anti-Cruelty Act exists to protect animals like this horse, and PETA is urging the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department to file all relevant charges against Kevin Lemke.”

PETA also sent letters to the United States Equestrian Federation (USEF) and the International Equestrian Federation (FEI) urging them to investigate the incident, revoke Lemke’s rights and membership, and bar him from participating in USEF and FEI-sanctioned events. respectively.

PETA – whose motto, in part, is that “animals are not ours to be used for fun or otherwise abuse” – opposes arrogance, which is a worldview focused on human superiority. For more information please visit PETA.org or subscribe to the group on Twitter, Facebook, or Instagram…
