Chatfield, Minnesota. – A covert PETA video investigation at Moulton Chinchilla Ranch, a major Minnesota chinchilla breeding facility that supplies laboratories and the pet trade, identified chinchillas suffering from open wounds, exposed bones, infections and other painful injuries that had not been treated. ailments. A PETA witness who worked at the Moulton Chinchilla Ranch has collected evidence showing that about 1,000 chinchillas in the area were enclosed in small open wire cages. Chinchillas were denied veterinary care for abscesses and ruptures of breast tissue, bulging or pus-filled eyes, and other serious illnesses. One chinchilla died due to being deprived of veterinary care due to a raw bloody wound, while another died after being attacked by a breeder’s dog and suffered overnight without care. Another had a large swelling under the chin. The owner of the mill admitted that he killed this and other chinchillas by breaking their necks, which did not lead to a painless or quick death.
Moulton Chinchilla Ranch sells chinchillas to laboratories, and staff associated with National Institutes of Healththen US naval, Harvard Medical Schooland numerous public universities in China, Germany, and US experimented with them. Records show that experimenters pierced the eardrums of chinchillas with knives, injected bacteria into their ears, exposed them to loud noises for hours, drilled holes in their skulls, and used electric shocks if they pressed the lever at the “wrong” time to find food.
“At Moulton Chinchilla Ranch, animals were kept in wire cages with nowhere to hide (a basic need for carnivores), left to suffer and die without minimal veterinary care, and sold survivors in a laboratory for further harm and killing,” says the senior vice – PETA President for Investigating Atrocities Daphne Nachminovich. “PETA is urging every lab that does business with the Moulton Chinchilla Ranch to stop using these vulnerable animals in experiments.”
PETA also submitted evidence to the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), which cited Moulton Chinchilla Ranch for over 100 federal animal welfare law violations since 2013. In 2018, the USDA also filed a formal complaint against the mill, which is pending. …
