Newfoundland Dog Size Comparison: Golden Retriever German Shepard Great Dane
Newfoundland dogs are known for their height and weight rather than their height!

While the Newfoundland dog may not be the largest breed out there, there’s no denying that these gentle giants are just that: giant! And this dog size comparison in Newfoundland will show you how true that is by pitting them against Great Danes, Golden Retrievers, German Shepherds and even you!

Known for their affection, intelligence and size, Newfoundland dogs started out as working dogs and have existed as an official breed ever since. 1886! They have also been in the Top 50 of the most popular dog breeds for the past 13 years. But do you know how big these sweet giants are?

Types of large dogs; Newfoundland dog
Newfoundland dogs can thank some of their size for their thick coat designed for water.

A quick glance shows that it is not surprising that the Newfoundland dog is one of the largest dog breeds out there. After all, as if their size alone wasn’t big enough, they look like a lion with their thick mane and fur!

Both male and female Newfoundland dogs, also known as Newf or Newfie, can reach a shoulder height of 28 inches. Not sure how high that is? It’s about 2 and a half feet and only a few inches from the standard height of most kitchen countertops! This means that, with their head down, your Newfie may just be watching you cook. However, Newfies are known for being taller than they are tall.

Male Newfoundland dogs can weigh up to 170 pounds, while females are more likely to weigh between 120 and 140 pounds. However, it is not uncommon to also find a Newfie as light as 100 pounds or as heavy as 180 pounds depending on their age and genetics.

Weighing in at 260 pounds, the largest Newfoundland dog ever nearly doubled the weight of the average human. And, at six feet from snout to tail, they’re also about half a meter longer than the average human height – a difference almost the same as an iPhone screen!

However, despite their large size, the American Kennel Club ranks these gargantuan giants as some of the most affectionate dogs around. The breed is generally known for being great with families and other pets, even earning the nickname “babysitting dog.” Of course, any dog as big as the Newfie will come with unique challenges as a pet, if only because of their size compared to humans!

Newfoundlands can be taller than a human when they stand on their hind legs!

Wondering how you would fit in with these giant giants?

With a shoulder height of 28 inches, Newfoundland dogs are about the size of a one-year-old baby. However, since they can grow to almost 6 feet tall, they are a lot of longer on their hind legs. In fact, since the global average human height is about 5’4″, there’s a good chance the Newfie can look right over your head!

Weight-wise, a male Newfie at their maximum weight is about the same as the average adult American. But if you were to weigh that same Newfoundland dog on the average three-year-old, it would take nearly 6 kids to weigh the same as him—an entire kindergarten class!

As for their paws, it may take large feet to support such a large dog. Newfoundland’s paws may even be the size of your hand! If you’re younger, they can be even bigger. They have strong, powerful legs with webbing between their toes that help them swim.

    Largest Dog Breeds: Great Dane
Although one of the largest dog breeds, Great Danes are known for being gentle.

Both Newfoundland and the Danish dog are considered some of the largest dog breeds, but for several reasons. After all, side by side, a Newfie looks much smaller than a Great Dane!

But really, there is only a difference of about 10 centimeters – the same as with a credit card. Where the Newfoundland dog stands at a shoulder height of about 28 inches, the Great Dane stands at 32 inches. However, when you take into account the Great Dane’s head and ears, the difference seems much greater.

However, the Great Dane only beats the Newfoundland in terms of height and weight. Newfies are often taller and bulkier than Great Danes. With lengths up to 6 feet and a double-layered coat of fur, a Newfoundland dog’s claim to fame comes from these parts of their size. However, the Great Dane still has the vertical advantage.

    Types of Retriever Dogs
While Golden Retrievers are not the largest, they are among the top 3 most popular dogs in the US

The golden retriever and the Newfoundland have many things in common. Both breeds can make great family pets thanks to their naturally happy and docile dispositions, and both even have webbed paws. However, when it comes to size, a side-by-side comparison will show that the Newfoundland is a clear winner.

At 24 inches tall, the tallest golden retriever is still an inch shorter than the smallest Newfoundland dog and three inches shorter than the tallest — an ink pen of a difference. There is also a 15-pound difference between the largest Goldie and the smallest Newfoundland dog.

However, in the largest of the Newfie, they can be as much as twice as heavy as even the largest male golden retriever, which only grows to about 75 pounds. Can you imagine needing two Goldies to balance the scales with these gentle giants?

From snout to tail, goldfish average around 42″, which is about three and a half feet. The largest Newfoundland dogs can also nearly double this size, with some records showing them to be 6 feet long.

German Shepherd sitting outside with tilting head
Even with those attentive ears, German Shepherds are no bigger than the Newfoundland dog!

The largest German Shepherds can grow to a height of 26 inches at the shoulder. Because a female Newfoundland’s dog is at least 25 inches, there’s the smallest possibility that a German Shepherd could be bigger.

At their tallest, however, the Newfoundland dog’s shoulder height is three inches taller than the largest male Shepherd. While this difference is only about as big as a colored pencil, it
    ca
n make a difference if you look at the heads and ears of these dogs as well.

German Shepherds range from 49 to 88 pounds, about the same as a punching bag. This means that even the largest German Shepherd is still about 10 pounds — an average pumpkin — lighter than the smallest Newfoundland dog.
